When I watched Oprah’s interview with actress Viola Davis about her memoir, Finding Me, on Netflix, I felt seen. My therapist had shared the video with me and I understood why she did after I watched it.
Our stories were so alike. Like me, Viola understood what it meant to be an outsider who never really fit in. So, it felt good knowing there was someone out there in the world who knew what it felt like to live like I had. I was not alone.
This happened two months after we soft-launched Faces Of Web3 in January 2022. We understood how it felt to be overlooked in the places we knew we had a lot to offer, so we wanted to shine the spotlight on talented-yet-unrecognized creators.
Hearing Viola speak validated our mission for the brand: to give underrepresented Web3 creators an opportunity to be seen, heard, and to craft their own narrative. That way, they’d have a better chance at tapping into the wealth Web3 promised.
In Q1, we focused on telling these stories with renewed vigor: the gun survivor who transforms food into art, the female executive who promotes mindfulness with her art, and the pharmaceutical director who worked on Marvel films.
And Wow!
Such powerful stories they told! The impact was profound. Other creators were joining the community, seeing themselves in the narratives, and learning from their experiences.
In Q2, we told more stories of creators fighting their daily battles to keep creating and the steps they took to overcome those obstacles. To increase the opportunities available to our growing community of faces, we also published job listings and explored talent onboarding, teaching new creators about NFTs and DAOs.
As we told these stories, a pattern began to emerge; creators needed more recognition from the Web3 ecosystem. Talent is nothing without a spotlight.
It is just as Viola said: “Everybody moves through life fighting to be seen.” We all need someone to care about our work. So, we decided we needed to do more to advocate for our creators.
Who we are now
Faces of Web3 is a creator-focused platform that helps African and underrepresented talent build wealth by finding innovative channels to expand their reach.
Our Vision
To create a better life for minorities through Web3.
Our Mission
Building a decentralized community to showcase, empower and foster the connection among African and minority web3 creators.
What’s next for us?
We want to become a home for underrepresented web3 creators everywhere, combining product and community to showcase, educate and expose as many people as we can to the opportunities in the web3 space.
If Web3 makes the internet ownable, we believe everyone—no matter their class or creed—should have this opportunity. We are currently in stealth mode to build our MVP, a product we believe will transform the creator economy by increasing independent creators’ access to the market.
If you’re a Web3 creator looking for new ways to hack visibility and tackle digital rights, join our waitlist here.
We’re also changing our visual identity, and becoming more deliberate about the brand. Our new identity is a visual manifestation of our newly defined values which guide us as we showcase and build wealth for under-represented web3 creators.
We are also supercharging our blog and expanding our palette to introduce new concepts in this fast-paced ecosystem. We will write endlessly about CC0s, hyperstructures, soulbound tokens and more, breaking down these high value concepts into bite-sized pieces that are more digestible to you. We will tell more stories spotlighting a wide range of creators and weave tales about AI taking over the world. We will also hold more spaces, so DM us about that idea you think no one else will share or understand. We will!
A lot has changed, but a lot of what makes us great has remained. We’ll still send out regular job listings, DeFi posts and a weekly roundup of news that keeps you in the loop.
Join the movement
Faces of Web3 is more than a brand; it’s a movement. You know the old saying: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together?”
We are in this for the long haul, and it’s become our life’s mission to help creators get everything they need to thrive. However, we cannot do this alone from our small corner of the world. Every retweet, every subscription, every advocate, every investor intro and every donation further validates and strengthens our idea, keeping the fire burning as well as the lights on. So follow us on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and join our waitlist.
To the next 30 years of Faces of Web3,
I bid ye farewell,
Signed,
Esther Eze (CEO and aspiring cat mom.)
P.S.: We want to reach as many underrepresented creators as possible, and we know that not everyone is in a position to. If you can help, we need you to lend us a hand. Support us by making introductions or donate to our Gitcoin round so millions of minority creators can benefit. Thank you.
